Customer Review: Defective out of box - lousy customer service
Bought the tv as a Circuit City close-out. Was defective when I brought it home. I assumed Sharp would replace it with new since it is 2 days old. They are insisting on a repair after a week wait. I had to call twice to get that info. Very disappointing customer service. Very disappointing experience with Aquos so far.
Customer Review: Sharp Aqous LC52D82U Excellent!
About one year ago I purchased the Sharp 52″ LCD TV. I am very happy with this purchase. The picture has excellent sharpness and color, with no color banding as experienced with some of the earlier versions. This TV has performed perfectly with no problems. A very nice feature of this TV is the automatic picture level control, which controls the level of brightness of the video under variable room lighting conditions, especially on a partly cloudy day, when the lighting constantly changes. The audio is good if you do not use maximum bass setting, as setting bass level too high overdrives the built-in speakers at high audio levels. The audio is surprisingly good at normal settings with the bottom mounted internal speakers. Don’t be afraid to explore all the video settings to achieve the picture that will please you, as it takes some experimenting to get this right, but it’s worth it. I highly recommend this TV after using it for almost one year. This is my 3rd Sharp TV….all with excellent reliability.

Garmin MapSource DVD for Garmin GPS Units, US Inland Lakes (010-10774-00)

June 15th, 2010 by leroy5169

Garmin 010-10774-00 MapSource Inland Lakes DVD You’ll have a great day on the water in store for you, when you use our U.S. Inland Lakes maps. From small, local lakes to large ones, this software contains highly detailed data for lakes of almost every size in the continental United States. With exceptional detail including amazing contour lines on most inland lakes plus high-definition shoreline, river and creek channels, islands, boat ramps, campgrounds, rivers, streams, tide stations and predictions, U.S. Coast Guard aids to navigation, a wrecks and obstructions database, and road data we’ve packed a lot of information onto our all-inclusive DVD or 5 preprogrammed cards. Inland Lakes cartography is available in three different formats, making it easy and convenient to load data to your compatible Garmin: MapSource DVD with coverage of the entire continental U.S., preprogrammed Garmin data cards, and preprogrammed microSD cards.
Customer Review: Garmin MapSource US Inland Lakes DVD
This lake software is great for me. This works on my Nuvi 780. I put an img file from my Topo 2008 on a SanDisk Ultra II 4 GB SDHC, and put the img file from this lake software on the Nuvi internal memory. Can’t have two img files in same location. Also if you put a Garmin gdb file on the internal memory or a SD card, Nuvi won’t see them. Need to use the MapSource program to create the image files (img). I have one topo and one lake image files saved in different folders on my computer; could make several different ones, and then just put whatever you need at the time into your Nuvi. I also bought a waterproof RAM case for my Nuvi for use in the boat next summer. The case has a flexable front, so you can still use the touch screen.
Customer Review: Am I the only one that thinks Inland Lakes is flawed?
I bought this software for my Garmin Etrex Vista HCx GPS mainly for use while kayaking in Minnesota and Wisconsin. After checking the maps of lakes that are among the more fully detailed, however, I find them not up to par for my mapping needs, and I don’t have the option of using another company’s map program with my Garmin GPS since the format is proprietary. I knew ahead of time that only about 8% of Minnesota’s 15,000 lakes were represented, and not all 1200 lakes included in the software were shown in great detail. I wasn’t happy about that, but at least I knew about it up front. The most glaring omissions in Inland Lakes is where the map fails to show connections between some lakes in a chain, such as where Lake Calhoun connects with Lake of the Isles via canal in Minneapolis, rivers that connect to lakes but not on the map, such as where the Sauk River connects to Kraus Lake near Cold Spring MN, and rivers that are missing sections on the map where in reality they are contiguous, like the Sauk River again, between Cold Spring and the Mississippi River. If you are exploring inland lakes and rivers with these maps in your GPS, you would likely also need other maps that fill in the gaps in the electronic map. To me, if Garmin is going to charge as much as they do for a map, the lakes and rivers they include should at least be accurate. If I get in trouble in the wilderness while kayaking, an accurate map is a must. At the very least it is expected. Paper maps have less errors. Because of these issues I am thinking of buying a Delorme PN-40 GPS which comes STANDARD with Topo USA including topographic, lake and street maps, and comes with a $100 credit toward their USGS Quad maps, aerial and satellite maps for about the same cost as my Garmin Vista HCx and one set of flawed optional maps. That way if one map isn’t 100% accurate, I can check another one to fill in the blanks, and I’m quite sure that between Delorme’s standard topographic and lake maps, I’ll be able to find more than 1200 lakes in Minnesota. I’ll have an even better chance of finding those hidden lakes with USGS Quad, aerial and satellite maps at my fingertips. So in summation, I’ve found Garmin’s Inland Lakes maps to be useful, but it’s not as precise as I need it to be. That’s too bad, because I like my Garmin Vista HCx GPS. Yet if I’d known about the flaws I found ahead of time, I never would have bought the maps or the GPS from Garmin. I’m still using the two for now, but I’ll be checking Google Maps or Google Earth first, before I leave on a trip.

Amazon.com
Manufacturer’s Description (July 11, 2008)

Easy to learn and simple to use, the waterproof Garmin Oregon 400i features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and preloaded U.S. inland lake and navigable river maps that provide boaters and anglers with shoreline details, depth contours, boat ramps and mile markers for thousand of lakes. The chart detail includes shoreline, depth contours, navaids and port plans. It also offers a high-resolution, color 3-inch touchscreen that reacts as you tap or drag through menus and options. With its high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix satellite prediction, Oregon 400i locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. It’s also equipped with a barometric altimeter and electronic compass, and it’s compatible with Garmin’s heart-rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors.

The Garmin Oregon 400i.

The Oregon 400i lets you customize five profiles–automotive, marine, recreation, fitness or geocaching–making the most beneficial features for each activity the easiest to access through quick shortcuts. The tough, 3-inch color touchscreen display is easy to read even in direct sunlight, and the Oregon’s easy-to-use interface means you’ll spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time searching for information.

It also plays well with others, allowing for wireless exchange of tracks, waypoints and geocaches between other Oregon units and Garmin Colorado models.

This unit has a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even while you’re standing still, and its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

Conveniently plug in optional preloaded microSD memory cards for all your outdoor activities on land or water. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you don’t have to worry about getting it wet. Just insert an optional Garmin MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Oregon provides turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Add optional topographic maps to take advantage of the Oregon’s 3D map view which gives you a better perspective of your elevation. And with optional BlueChart g2 Vision maps, you’ll get everything you need for a great day on the water including depth contours, navaids and harbors.

Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. Geocaching is even easier with the Oregon, which quickly downloads online information for every cache, such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints and description, so that you don’t have to tote printouts with you.

Speck MacBook Pro 17 Aluminum Unibody Laptop See Thru Crystal Case - CLEAR

June 15th, 2010 by leroy5169

Marketing description is not available.
Customer Review: Excellent product, better than I expected
I am so happy with this product. I had my computer wrapped and taped in the original plastic since I got it a few mos. ago, however, the plastic wrap was starting to get wrinkled and was falling off, but this new hard plastic cover makes my laptop look newer than new. It snapped on without a hitch. Yes it does get minor scratches on it, (and I have caught my cats walking on it when closed.) Maybe if I keep my computer a long time, I might replace this plastic cover if it looks bad, but it does protect the original computer case; I know eventually the outside would get scratched and banged up. I didn’t want to spend a lot, but I can honestly say this product is worth the price. I’m glad I got a clear case, too, and the hard case instead of one that you peel on and off.
Customer Review: Scratches easily, but better the Speck case than the MacBook Pro!!
The MacBook Pro (MBP) is a beauty with its slim, trim design. The aluminium keeps heat down, but it does add to the risk of denting and other problems. Including, theoretically, short circuiting. AppleCare doesn’t cover accidents and normal wear and tear, and I don’t think they would consider a malleable shell a design flaw. And they aren’t going to use solid steel for the chassis any time soon! The Speck case cover, which snaps easily over the MBP, protects against scratching or denting the case. That doesn’t mean the Speck case is scratch-proof, but a $40 cover for a $2500 notebook - then read up on the hapless people who never bought a case cover and have accidentally dropped or dented their units. Even with the case on, I treat my MBP with as much respect as possible - I would for any portable device. But this case is invaluable for what it does: Shields the MBP chassis from dents and scratches. Highly recommended.

Tamrac 3385 Aero Speed Pack 85 Dual Access Photo/Laptop Backpack (Rust)

June 15th, 2010 by leroy5169

Tamrac’s Speed Pack 85 Dual Access Photo/Laptop Backpack is the perfect carrying solution for the photographer who prefers the comfort of a backpack, but doesn’t want to sacrifice the ability to quickly and easily access photo gear. To accomplish this, Tamrac developed an innovative Dual Access System that allows fast access through the side door when the pack is worn over one shoulder. Like a traditional photo backpack, equipment can also be accessed through the front panel with the pack is removed. This versatile backpack holds and protects a DSLR with a grip and lens attached (including most 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lenses), 2-3 additional lenses and accessories. A separate, foam-padded laptop compartment holds most 17-Inch screen laptops. For weather protection, the side door is equipped with a water-resistant zipper while the front panel has a weather flap. Inside the side door, accessory pockets hold memory cards, lens caps and other accessories. In addition to the completely foam padded bottom compartment, the pack has a large top compartment perfect for personal items, such as a lunch or light jacket. An elasticized mesh side pocket provides convenient access to a water bottle. The pack features a carrying handle and a comfortable, foam-padded backpack harness contoured to distribute the weight of the camera gear across the shoulders. Two lash tabs on the bottom allow a tripod to be carried (requires accessory straps, Model S-113, sold separately).
Customer Review: Nice Concept - Poorly Thought Out
The Tamrac Aero Speed Pack 85 arrived about an hour ago and already I have serious doubts about it. When I ordered the pack I wanted something to carry my Nikon D2X with a Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8 lens attached along with a flash and some filters. As advertised this appeared to be ideal for my intended use; just large enough to carry my camera, an extra lens, a flash, some filters along with couple more items plus there would be quick access to my camera. This would be fantastic for short hikes or long walks. I put my camera with a Nikkor 28-120 f/3.5 lens attached in the pack just to try it out. As soon as I put the pack on my back I realized it may not be the best thing since sliced bread. Even with only the weight of a camera and small lens it didn’t feel quite right. Then I swung the pack around, as is shown in the Tamrac video. Oh my, the left shoulder strap most fell off my shoulder, (not a good thing). Then I opened the side access door to pull out the camera, it was not easy trying to pull the camera out of the pack while making sure the left shoulder strap didn’t fall off. Putting the camera back also proved to be quite a balancing act. This pack is advertised as, “Completely foam padded bottom photo compartment holds and protects a digital SLR camera with a grip and lens attached (including most 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lenses)”. This pack will not hold the D2X camera with my 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens attached. In fact I cannot carry both the lens and camera in the pack at the same time. Needless to say this pack is going back Monday.
Customer Review: Engineering flaws make this backpack unusable
I read the reviews of this backpack on Amazon before purchasing it, thinking: I can deal with the zipper if it’s a little difficult, as long as it comes with the peace of mind that my equipment will be protected from the elements. Unfortunately, not only were the reviews correct about the zipper’s incredible stiffness, but the zipper is also quite flimsy and came undone on my first hike out of the house. The zipper’s waterproofing feature I was interested in is useless when it comes undone. In addition, I was afraid that the zipper would come undone without my noticing and my equipment would fall out the side. The shoddily engineered zipper is the primary reason I sent this bag back. This would have been my first camera backpack, so I can’t compare extensively to other products, but here are my other thoughts: - this is quite a massive bag, at nearly 4 pounds, with lots of padding and space for equipment, a raincoat or lunch, and your laptop - given the large size of the backpack, it would’ve been good to have a comfortable waist strap - despite the weight of the backpack and my equipment within (I wore it for an afternoon with both my camera gear and some extra weight to see what it would be like fully loaded), the bag is quite comfortable, with lots of padding in the shoulder straps and cushioning against your back - I would have liked a few extra lash straps on the outside to attach extra equipment while hiking or traveling, but as is, the exterior is quite clean and easy on the eyes - both the bottom and top padding for the camera pocket are removable; I suppose this would let you clean things thoroughly, although the bag doesn’t seem to be designed such that you would want to fully remove these so they just seem a bit flimsy Here’s my advice: don’t get this bag until they fix the zipper. If that ever happens, this will be well worth the money.
